The parrot of the genus ara ararauna is the largest among the whole Psittacidae family. Its vibrant colors make it one of the most beautiful parrots.
The male is indistinguishable from the female, there is no sexual dimorphism. It lives mainly in the treetops, where it is most peaceful. The female usually lays eggs in the cavity of an old tree. Its cry serves as an alarm for many animals.
The blue macaw is very common in places. It is therefore not considered an endangered species. On the other hand, it is experiencing a decline. In some areas, it has even almost disappeared due to habitat destruction, hunting and marketing as an aviary bird. Despite numerous safeguard measures and its status as a protected species since 1986, the blue macaw is today vulnerable.

Within groups of blue and yellow macaws, which can number as many as 20 individuals, it is possible to identify couples, which fly together almost touching wings.
