The end of the oiled birds

Rehabilitation objective

Since the creation of SANCCOB more than 85,000 birds have been treated. Its mission is the conservation and protection of South African seabirds, especially endangered species, for the benefit of present and future generations.

Its objective is to treat and rehabilitate oiled, injured or orphaned birds. SANCCOB teams monitor the care, hand rearing and rehabilitation of birds with the aim of reintroduction into the natural environment.

SANCCOB is committed to passing on its skills in the breeding of seabirds. The rehabilitation of seabirds has been the subject of a series of studies by researchers, and their findings have been published. This research benefits birds in the wild, as well as birds in captivity or recovering. Hand-rearing know-how is helping to mitigate the decline in the number of wild African penguins by reintroducing fully independent human-raised chicks into their natural environment.

Each year, the Le PAL Nature Foundation provides financial assistance to this association to operate its health center and achieve its objectives. In 2010, an animal handler from PAL, specializing in marine animals, went to help out with a massive arrival of chicks to feed and wean in preparation for their release. His stay allowed him to learn hand-rearing techniques for birds.
In 2015, the Le PAL Nature Foundation added exceptional aid to this budget to help SANCCOB employees and volunteers cope with an increase in the number of chicks to be raised and cared for, as well as an increase in the price of fish (food essential of Cape penguins).

SANCCOB offers education and awareness programs to increase public awareness of the environment and offer solutions to better protect it.
